Veteran economist, engaging and thought provoking writer, Marxist and polemicist, Ashok Mitra, passed away on 1 May 2018.
He was former finance minister of West Bengal and had been a Trustee of the Sameeksha Trust that brings out the Economic and Political Weekly.
After doing his post graduation in Economics from the Benaras Hindu University, he taught at the University of Lucknow and later got a doctorate from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands. He also taught at the Economic Development Institute in Washington DC and later at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C). He was the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India, and then Chairman of the Agricultural Prices Commission of the Government of India.
His contribution to Economic Weekly, the EPW and the EPW Research Foundation was immense and unforgettable.
Reported to have once famously retorted, “I am not a gentleman. I am a communist,” he wrote the very popular and much appreciated “Calcutta Diary”.
